RTMC at 150:

From a Faithful Past to a Visionary Future

Remembering God’s Faithfulness • Renewing Our Calling • Moving Forward by His Spirit

Rev. Vilbert Vallance • Associate Pastor, Richmond Town Methodist Church

🌿 Grace Has Brought Us This Far

As Richmond Town Methodist Church celebrates 150 years of God’s faithfulness, we stand at a significant moment in our history.

The souvenir magazine you hold in your hands is titled Grace & Growth — and those two words are not merely a description of the past.

They are a mandate for the future.

Grace has brought us this far; growth is what faithfulness to that grace now demands of us.

We look back with gratitude, but we must also look forward with faith.

Anniversary celebrations are not merely occasions to remember what God has done; they are invitations to ask what God wants to do through us in the years ahead.

“Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint.”

Proverbs 29:18

Vision gives direction, purpose, and focus.

Without vision, our energy, resources, gifts, and ministries can become scattered.

The question before us is therefore not simply:

“What has RTMC been?”

but:

“What is God calling RTMC to become over the next 25 years?”

🕊️ From Memory to Mission

We rightly celebrate our heritage.

For 150 years, generations have worshipped, served, prayed, preached, witnessed, sacrificed, and passed the faith from one generation to another.

But our history must not become a museum in which we merely admire yesterday.

The past is our foundation, not our destination.

HINDSIGHT

Helps us learn from our history.

INSIGHT

Helps us see clearly where we are now.

FORESIGHT

Helps us see where God may be leading us.

True vision holds all three together.

The challenge for RTMC is to honour the legacy of the past while courageously imagining the future.

We must not merely ask:

“How was RTMC 50 or 100 years ago?”

We must ask:

“What will RTMC look like 25 years from now?”

⛪ Seeing the Cathedral

There is a well-known illustration of three bricklayers.

One says:

“I am laying bricks.”

Another says:

“I am building a wall.”

The third says:

“I am building a cathedral to the glory of God.”

All three are doing the same work, but only one sees the larger picture.

That is the challenge before RTMC.

Our worship services, Sunday school, Bible studies, youth ministry, men’s and women’s fellowships, outreach, pastoral care, and prayer gatherings may sometimes appear to be separate “bricks.”

But what are we building?

“We are building a community of faith for the glory of God.”

At 150, RTMC must see beyond individual activities and see the cathedral:

A vibrant, Spirit-filled, Christ-centred Methodist congregation that influences Bangalore and reaches the next generation.

✨ With God’s Help: A 25-Year Vision for RTMC

A 25-year vision requires foresight, insight, and hindsight working together.

Our vision must be bold enough to challenge our present reality.

Over the next 25 years, RTMC can prayerfully envision becoming:

🙏 A Deeply Spiritual Church

Where prayer, worship, Scripture, and the Holy Spirit are at the centre of everything we do.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A Multigenerational Church

Where children, young people, families, adults, and seniors all have a meaningful place.

🌱 A Church That Develops the Next Generation

A church that intentionally develops and equips the next generation of leaders.

🌍 A Missional Church

A church that does not merely wait for people to come, but goes into the community with the Gospel.

💛 A Compassionate Church

A church that ministers to the lonely, vulnerable, grieving, elderly, poor, and hurting.

🎓 A Church That Engages Students and Young Professionals

Including people from different cultural and national backgrounds.

🤲 A Church That Equips Every Member for Ministry

Recognising that ministry is not the responsibility of pastors alone.

♿ A Church That Reaches Those with Disabilities

Reaching out intentionally to those with physical and mental disabilities.

🧠 A Church That Takes Mental Health Seriously

Creating a safe, informed, and compassionate community for those who struggle.

🌎 A Church Whose Influence Extends Beyond Its Walls

A church that continues blessing Bangalore and the wider world.

🚀 Let Vision Become Action

“Write the vision and make it plain.”

Habakkuk 2:2

RTMC’s 25-year vision cannot remain a beautiful anniversary statement.

It must become a roadmap.

The vision can be divided into five-year seasons, with clear annual priorities and measurable actions.

The question we must continually ask is:

“What must we start today if we want to see that future 25 years from now?”

Vision requires:

Action.
Commitment.
Resources.
Leadership development.
Prayer.
Sacrifice.
Perseverance.

🌿 A Church That Refuses to Stand Still

A 150-year-old church faces a temptation: to celebrate its history while becoming comfortable in its present.

But God has not brought RTMC through 150 years merely to preserve the past.

He has brought us this far so that we can continue the mission.

“Thus far the Lord has helped us.”

1 Samuel 7:12

Now we must ask:

“Lord, what do You want to do through RTMC in the next 25 years?”

Our anniversary is not an ending. It is a launching point.

The next generation must not inherit merely a historic church building or a collection of memories.

They must inherit:

A living faith.
A compelling mission.
A culture of prayer.
A passion for the Gospel.
A vision for the future.

🕊️ Moving Forward by His Spirit

“Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord Almighty.”

Zechariah 4:6

The theme verse of our 150th Anniversary

We cannot build RTMC’s future through human strength, programmes, money, buildings, or administration alone.

We need:

The Holy Spirit.
Prayer.
Unity.
A committed pastoral team.
Courageous leadership.
The participation of every generation.

And above all, we need to discern what God is saying to His church.

The magazine you hold is titled Grace & Growth because that is what 150 years of faithful witness has been — and what the next 25 must be also.

Not merely another 25 years of church activity, but:

25 years of purposeful, Spirit-led mission.

✝️ Conclusion

At 150, we stand between a remarkable past and an exciting future.

Let us:

Remember the past with gratitude.
Learn from it with humility.
Live faithfully in the present.
Look toward the future with courage.

“Do not merely lay bricks. See the cathedral.”

For RTMC, the cathedral is a church that is:

Spiritually alive.
Missional.
Engaged.
Generationally connected.
Outward-looking.
Compassionate.
Committed to making disciples for Jesus Christ.

The question before us is no longer simply:

“What has God done in RTMC?”

It is:

“What might God do through RTMC in the next 25 years?”

May the answer be written in faith, pursued in prayer, sustained by perseverance, and accomplished not by might nor by power —

but by the Spirit of the living God.

✞ 150 YEARS OF GRACE & GROWTH

The next 25 years: a vision pursued by faith.

One continuing mission. One faithful God.
